You get pins and needles when you deprive part of your body of blood. I guess the pins and needles are little signals sent by your nerves complaining about that lack of blood.

Paraesthesia or ‘pins and needles’ is caused by the compression of nerves, usually in a limb. The sensation can also be caused by a series of nasty conditions, although most people’s pins and needles, although unpleasant, disappear quickly with no side effects!
