I took up the trumpet when I was 16, so quite late I guess. I had free lessons at school during sixth form but never really got any good. I carried on playing at University in the University of York Concert Band (but not having lessons due to lack of money!) and then I have continued to play in Concert Bands and, more recently Jazz/Swing bands wherever I have lived. I love playing in the Jazz band, and despite not having lessons it’s great to feel you are still playing and meet a lot of cool people too.
Reading music is the bit I struggle with – I should really get on with it and try and learn properly, I think it would be awesome to just be able to sit and tinkle on a piano!
I play the guitar and the saxophone and i love to write my own songs. They are not very good really but it feels fantastic to create something from nothing. Also music is a wonderful way to relax and i also find it helps me think. When i have a big piece of work to do while at home i often sit next to the guitar and if i get stuck i play with the guitar while i think and i find it helps 🙂
I do play the piano, but never good enough to do so in public. I like Jazz and Bluesy music, and I still occasionally sit down at a piano (when everyone else is out) and play a few tunes. But it’s got lower down the list of things I do when I get home.
I listen to a lot of music at work. It’s a great way to cut out distractions and focus on getting some work done. It’s not so helpful if you need to think hard and figure stuff out though.
I used to play the bassoon, but gave up pretty quickly. As a teenager the fact I had to carry it into school every week was a pain! A bad reason I know. I am also not a very musical person, so it was always a struggle to do well in lessons.
no, but always want to learn playing a guitar, and trying a few times but giving up quickly, no having enough patience to practise.. but I used to sing at choir if it counts:)
